Are you between 19 and 25 years old? Don’t really have a place you can call home? Don’t feel you can expect much from your family? Don’t have a (real) job, left school and usually don’t have that much money in your pocket? Then, this study might be of interest to you!

At the University of British Columbia (UBC), in the counselling psychology program, we are conducting a study made just for you! We are studying the relationships young people have with peers and adults not in their family. Would you be interested in coming to UBC and help us? You will have the choice of participating in one or two interviews. In the second interview, you will have the opportunity to bring a friend if you wish. We pay $20 for each interview AND bus fares to go back and forth to UBC!

Principal Investigator: Dr. Richard Young
Co-Investigator: Dr. Sheila Marshall

If you are interested in hearing more about this opportunity please email us at ubcyouthresearch@gmail.com or
call us at (604) 822-6380 to leave your name and a number where you can be reached. Someone from the research team will contact you.

Solstice Lantern Festival Dec. 21

Vancouver's Winter Solstice Lantern Festival invites you to help us welcome the sun back to our city!

The 16th annual Winter Solstice Lantern Festival, on Monday December 21st, invites volunteers to help us illuminate the longest night of the year with lanterns, fire displays, singing, drumming, music, dancing and good cheer. Come meet some great people, and help us create the magic! Volunteers of all abilities are needed.

Thousands of people will converge on this very special night, as we celebrate the return of the sun with a glowing constellation of lanterns and participatory entertainment. Five Vancouver neighbourhoods host simultaneous festivals, which are community-based and reflect the unique nature of each neighbourhood. Intimate and accessible, every festival features special attractions and surprises.

ONE FESTIVAL, FIVE NEIGHBOURHOODS

East Side/Commercial Drive at Britannia Community Centre
Yaletown at the Roundhouse Community Centre
Granville Island at Performance Works and the False Creek Community Centre
Strathcona at Strathcona Community Centre
Chinatown at Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden

BE PART OF THE MAGIC!

You can play a very special role in the Solstice Festival by:

• Doing some pre-festival distribution of posters and flyers.
• Assisting with pre-festival lantern making workshops all across town
• Helping coordinate a lantern procession in your neighbourhood
• Helping decorate event venues in your neighbourhood, serve hot chocolate, lead a procession, or set up lanterns, labyrinths, installations, etc.
• Being an onsite marshall, helper, or "donation fairy"
• Bringing a team of 8 friends to be Banner Dancers for the Roundhouse Opening Ceremony – no experience necessary!
• Helping with take-down and clean-up (always appreciated!)
• The ever-handy "whatever you'd like me to do"
• or...your suggestion...where would your skills and interests fit best?

Please contact us by email and let us know what you'd like to do best, and which festival neighbourhood you would like to volunteer at.

To learn the ever-evolving secrets of this beautiful festival go to http://www.secretlantern.org

We look forward to playing with you.
Deepest thanks,
The Secret Lantern Society

Enthusiasts needed for charitable online crowdsourcing project (Vancouver)

Crowdsourced Intelligence for Charities

Hello everyone,

I'm here to ask for your help with a charitable crowdsourcing project of mine.

The concept of the project can be summarized in three points:
-Participate in polls that will help every charity out there.

-Access poll results free of charge to help inform your own charity or cause.

-Collaborate to create new polls and initiatives.

Now let me explain in more detail.

I have recently volunteered to do market research work for a certain charitable organization, and as expected, with no actual budget set aside for the task. This is why I decided to start a group, aiming to address a common challenge that volunteers and fund-strapped charities face when promoting their causes: lack of free information on how best to do it.

Up-to-date information on donor behavior and trends helps greatly with identifying the best approach to maximize fundraising effectiveness. This sort of market intelligence, ironically, is rarely donated to charities.

Market research and intelligence reports created by research companies usually require hundreds of dollars to access and view; money that could instead be spent on those who desperately need it.

This is where we (and that includes you, if you would help) come in. CIC aims to crowdsource such intelligence by polling the public (fans, supporters) in easy, cost-free ways, and share the results freely with those who need them.

My call to action to you would be asking you to become a member and active participant/advocate of the group. So far it's a one man effort to promote the project and get people to participate, and I could use some help.

I especially need people who are willing to share the ownership of this project, push it through online social media (and traditional media as well if possible), and establish communications with charities themselves. All backgrounds are welcome, but those with knowledge of online spaces, marketing, charity and fundraising experience would be especially useful.

If interested, please send me an email with information about your skill set and background, and we'll go from there.

Thank you all in advance.

Looking for a way to spread Christmas Cheer? I need some help this yr (Sry / Downtown Van)

about WHO: I am a late-twenties single woman with a limited income who lives for Christmas and random acts of kindness. (It sometimes proves very difficult to be both of those things in one!) I live in Surrey.

about WHY: Everyone has their own definition of what Christmas means to them. To me, it is about spreading cheer. I know there are are numerous charities established to assist the less fortunate at this time of the year, but there are some facts I can't ignore: The homeless (no matter what your take on the issue itself is) are in desperate need of Cheer at Christmas. Home is where it all takes place, and they do not have that very thing. It is just another cold night on the street. These people don't even qualify for many of the programs meant to assist the "needy" because they cannot register with a residential address... I don't personally care who they are or why they are there, all I need to know is they ARE THERE and I am not, and it is Christmas. I believe that anything I can do to put a smile on a few faces is time and energy well spent. I have a few traditions I carry out each Christmas involving annonymous giving. I shop for children from a Christmas bureau before I begin my standard Christmas list. I have been fortunate enough to be able to sponsor an entire family 3 out of the past 10 years. There is nothing like it. My most treasured Christmas tradition, however, is in danger this year.

about WHAT & WHEN: Every Christmas Eve without fail (since I started years back), I set out on the streets of Downtown Vancouver with a load of Christmas stockings. These stockings are handed, face to face, to people who are obviously spending Christmas on the street. Normally by this time I am at least falf-way through filling the stockings, but this year I haven't been able to find the funds to even get a start yet. I'm really afraid that I won't be able to at all. That would mean breaking my tradition and Christmas just wouldn't have the same meaning this year.

about HOW: I am putting this out there in hopes that maybe Christmas magic will help this message reach the eyes of a Christmas Angel somewhere out there who has a desire to help others this Christmas and is looking for a way to contribute. I am open to and grateful for any help in any form that someone is willing to offer. Whether someone would like to donate items to fill the stockings (and I will stuff and deliver), or whether someone would like to join me for the entire process from start to finish and experience the delivery directly, or whether you'd like to contribute some or all of the funds to enable me to purchase and assemble the stockings-- Any of the above would be wonderful. It's really up to you. After all, I literally would not be able to do this without you this year. I am grateful that you are even reading my story and perhaps considering.

The cost varies according to how many stockings I can manage to fill. In past years, I have delivered between 100 (on a good year) and 15 (when I have little more than determination to go on) The norm is between 25 and 50 stockings.

Usually it will cost me about $100 - $125 per 25 stockings.

What I will have to buy (per each 25) is roughly as follows:

-The actual stockings, which I get from a Dollar store

-25 pairs (50 is better/ 2 each) of simple cotton stretch gloves. (This is the most important item in my opinion and the reason I do it.)
-25 touques (from discount store)

-25 - 50 candy canes
-Box mini candy canes
-Asst'd foil-covered Chocolate balls and figures
-Asst'd hard candies

-Case of Granola bars
-case of Rice Krispie squares
-case of cello-wrapped cookies
-case of individual pack asst'd nuts / raisin boxes
-Whatever other substantial snacks I find on sale

-Box of mandarin oranges
-Flat of juice boxes

-Small novelty item of some sort

I try and make them enjoyable and practical, not elaborate. But to someone who expects to recieve nothing, a full stocking in their hands on Christmas Eve IS a miracle. And it is so evident in their eyes. I set out with the intention to warm some hands and some hearts, but my heart has benefitted from the most warmth through the years. It's simply an amazing experience and I truly hope it comes through for this year.

If this spoke to you at all, and you are able to help in some way (any way) Please, contact me.

Merry (early) Christmas to you! :)

Volunteer with Meals on Wheels during the Olympics

Parking is going to be a problem during the Olympics so we need extra volunteers who are able to walk around the downtown and Strathcona (Downtown East side) neighbourhoods to help our regular volunteers deliver meals.
We will be delivering starting at 10am Monday to Friday. We are estimating it will take about 2 hours. Even one day during that time will be helpful.

Please email me howeyj@carebc.ca or call 604-733-9177 ext. 107 for more information,
Thanks!
Verona is a very famous city in the north east of Italy (do you remember Romeo & Juliet by Shakespeare???). It is a very tourist place with a long history and culture; rich of historical monuments, first of all the famous Arena (the ancient Roman theatre). Even though it is a great example of a fortified town, in fact the walls and the surrounding area is going to become a national park. Unfortunately, some parts of the area are still damaged and abandoned. International volunteers will be working on two different middle-term projects in this town:
SANTA MARTA: Santa Marta was the head quarters of the Austrian army in Northern Italy during the 19th century. Local environmental groups are in charge of the maintenance of Santa Marta’s park situated near Porta Vescovo and the green areas on the hill, along the historical Walls of Verona, dating back to the 1500s.
The main works are cleaning, cutting grass and branches and general maintenance of Santa Marta’s park and the green areas up the hill, along the historical Walls of Verona. Volunteers will participate in weekly meetings to deepen their knowledge on environmental issues, such as air pollution, energy, etc.
Volunteers will also participate in the associations manifestations such as urban trekkings (thematic walks along the Walls of Verona) and environmental campaigns (Save the Art, Clean up the World, Alps Caravan, etc.)...
VILLA BURI: Villa Buri is a Venetian Villa built in the beginning of the 1600’s. It is situated at about 5 kilometres east from the centre of Verona. It is the head office of civil and religious associations.
This Villa is surrounded by 4 hectares of park which have a particularly interesting diversity of flora and fauna. The park is attended by an average of 30 000 visitors per year.
Hi,

I have written an ebook to help young people aged 12+ with finding their passion, reach their goals, have a positive attitude and how to deal with failure.
The ebook consists of real life stories and exercises at the end of each chapter to help them relate the stories to their own life. I foresee parents and teachers working along side youth to help complete the exercises. It is about 80 pages long and is in PDF format.

My overall vision is to reach 1 million youth by 2014.

I am seeking parents who would be interested in reading a complimentary copy of my ebook and reading it with their child to provide me with feedback on how effective it is.

If you are interested, please respond to this posting to contact me.

We are looking for male participants for a Men's Point of View on some issues to be featured on our first issue. If you are between the ages of 25 -40 and interested in being featured in this magazine (without pay-volunteer), please respond.
We have talked to some women about realtionships and most of them say they try to avoid the following types of men:
THE PLAYER - sophisticated, drop-dead fine but like to play around with different women...every woman wants him so he goes for it.
THE SMOOTH TALKER - always demanding to know where his woman is, more like a control freak.
THE EMOTIONAL ABUSER - always telling a woman that no one else wants her, she is not good enough...etc..
THE MAMA'S BOY - living with his parents no because he taking care of them. Likes to get things for free and believes they derseve to get everything handed to them.
THE IMPROVER - always telling a woman what needs to improve like hair, friends, weight, etc.

If you are one of these or you were in the past please send us your point of view on why women should not avoid these types of men. Email: info@sistasistermag.com.
If we decide to publish your story we will contact you for an interview.

The UBC Sexual Psychophysiology and Neuroendocrinology Laboratory in the Department of Psychology at the University of British Columbia is seeking medically healthy adult women for a study on the physiology of female sexual arousal. This research is a pilot study and the purpose is to investigate whether sexual arousal in women is accompanied by changes in levels of endocannabinoids (substances within the body which stimulate cannabinoid receptors). If so, the findings would suggest that endocannabinoids may play a role in sexual arousal in women and would have implications for the understanding of female sexual functioning and the treatment of female sexual difficulties.

The Isan is also one of the regions of Thailand where traditions are preserved and respected; the Isan culture is influenced by Laos and Lao culture. This influence is represented in their special cooking, handicrafts, music and dance and on the typical Muay Thai Boxing. The Bo Pan Khan site dates back to the bronze era, when it was a main economic centre of the region due to the rock salt that could be found in the soil. Nowadays, the site is virtually abandoned despite efforts of the Thai government in the 90's to attract local tourists. Bo Pan Khan is surrounded by water, which is now filled with riverweed.

Environmental conservation is the main work of the project. The projects are:
- The volunteers will work at Bo Pan Khan to help cutting the riverweed, then take a riverweed to make fertilizer, cleaning around the area and planting trees or flowers in the garden.
Project S.o.c.i.a.l. is a new non-profit based out of Vancouver and Established in 2009. We would like to let you know about our current initiatives and the services we are offering. At the moment, "Take It To The Streets" is our current campaign. We hope to promote kindness between citizens and people in desperate need. On a regular basis, we go and hand out slices of pizza to people living on the streets, commit a random act of kindness to a fellow citizen ..ie: Buying them a coffee or purchasing for their bus ticket. Another way we like to help is thru collecting used clothes, blankets, towels, jackets, flashlights, and other misc hygiene items. Are you interested in volunteering. We are always looking for people who would like to make a difference and help further our cause.

Here are a few current volunteer opportunities that are available:

Servers- People who would be willing to hand out slices of pizza to people in need.
Street Team- As a member of the street team.. you would be involved in handing out flyers to people and letting people know what the group is about.
Donation Collectors: You will collect and setup times to collect donations that will then be distributed at a later date.
Givers- Basically, the idea is going around and doing random nice things for people. The message is then passed on and hopefully that person does something nice for someone else.

If you are interested in volunteering or want to know more about your great opportunities, please contact Jonathan at 778-868-0382 or by Email: dpark11@telus.net

Functional Brain Imaging Research on Psychosis Participants Required! (UBC Hospital, Vancouver, BC)

Researchers at UBC are conducting a study on psychosis and brain imaging. If you are between the ages of 19 to 55, fluent in English, with a history of schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder or schizophreniform disorder and are interested in contributing to brain research using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to scan your brain, we invite you to participate in our study!

In order to better understand why hallucinations and delusions occur in some individuals with psychosis and not others, this study will include participants with and without symptoms of psychosis to partake in in various tasks of memory, decision making and sequencing as well as two different cognitive tasks while undergoing a functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) scan.

fMRI is a method of looking at brain activity during simple tasks. MRI is similar to an X-ray but uses a magnetic field and radio waves to produce a picture of the brain. Due to the use of a magnetic field and radio waves, the participant is not exposed to X-ray or radiation.

Study Procedure
DAY 1: (approximately 3-4 hours)
*A medical history and symptom assessment will be done including psychiatric history and clinical interviews.
*A one-hour fMRI scan will be conducted. We'll even give you a picture of your brain!
*Also includes computerized cognitive tasks involving memory, decision making and sequencing.
*Option of wearing an actiwatch, which is the size of a small watch that can be worn in the shower. The actiwatch is an electronic device that records activity and sleep cycles.
DAY 2: NEXT DAY (approximately 3-4 hours)
Similar to Day 1.
***A total of 2 fMRI scans over 2 days will be conducted.
Total amount of time required: 6-8 hours over a 2 day period at UBC Hospital

If you are interested please respond to this add for more information.

*This study has been approved by the UBC Clinical Research Ethics Board.
**Information resulting from this research study will be kept confidential and secure.
***An honorarium will be provided in addition to any out-of-pocket expenses of getting to UBC such as parking, gas (flat rate) or bus fare with valid receipts.

HELP DEFENCELESS ANIMALS
We desperately need compassionate volunteers to help these Animals at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O52lcG5sOF4 to spread their message around.
Each day, thousands of animals around the world experience nightmarish abuse, torture and pain. Their cries, whimper and howls are hidden away from civilized lives in our town, yet unknowing consumers are increasing the cruel treatment of these caged and helpless animals through the choices they make.

Do you care enough to volunteer to spend some time 2-3 times a week to find animal -related news to post blog entries on myspace and facebook, or better still create your own blog / website? E.g. see my website/ blog : http://www.Heart4Animals.com

I started updating this website with animal-related news because the more people know what animals go through, the more people will refrain from buying products which will further increase animal suffering e.g. fur / fur-lined sweaters / outercoats (see picture below).
Part 2

If you or if you know of anyone who know Mandarin, Japanese, Korean, Farsi, or any other language please enlist their participation as these are enormous markets that not exposed to the cruelty involved in the animal trade, and also, the animal organizations have not been able to penetrate into these markets deep enough. (See http://www.heart4animals.com/?s=korea ) Try to enlist people who know such language to start blogs / facebook / myspace / zorpia accounts to spread the message around.

Please tell your friends / relatives about the horrible cruelty involved at http://www.heart4animals.com/?s=china+fur+signatures to raise their awareness and ask them not to buy any fur-lined sweaters / outercoats as an animal has to go through an agonizing and slow death to provide the fur.

UNYA's mandate is to provide meaningful opportunities for Native youth in the urban setting. Our goal is to be a safe place for Native youth to come and find out about programs and services at UNYA and in the broader community. We continue to focus much of our efforts on community development initiatives, as we believe that the strengthening of our community as a whole can have a tremendous positive impact on the lives of Native youth.

The goal of the Kinnections Program is to connect Native youth in foster care (aged 15-19) with volunteer community members who will act as mentor, advocate, and friend. Our hope is that the friendships formed will be long term and support the youth as they transition into adulthood. These supportive relationships meet UNYAs mandate by engaging youth in meaningful and fun activities in the community. Furthermore, having a positive and consistent role model who plans one-on-one activities with them will contribute to the youth growing into a capable and confident adult.
1. No highlights unless you want your hair to break off because this is an aggressive process.
2. You must have light brown hair or lighter to achieve this. So no dark brown or brown hair.
3.If you've highlighted your hair and then colored it darker you cannot do this unless again you want your hair to break off.
This is a one time opportunity to be a color model at one of the top spas in BC; because of the aggressiveness of the process, I don't want you to miss this, PHOTO SUBMISSION mandatory.
The city has recorded history dating back a thousand years and a mythical history which explains the origin of the name - apparently, this was the place where the demon Mahishasura was slain by the Goddess Chamundi.
Dear Sir/Madam,

I am an 25 year old male from the Netherlands. Recently I moved to Canada to live here for a while. I finished my University last year and went here for an adventure. I was searching for a job, but on a short notice, that might be very difficult. And since my Dutch girlfriend will come to visit me around the Christmas time, I do have much spare time now and thought it would be nice to do something for the Canadian community. So I am available in the next month (until Sunday 13th of December) to do volunteer work.
I would like to find volunteer work for about 24 hours/week. I am most interested to do any volunteer work which has to do something with animals or humans. I do NOT want to be a volunteer for any medical experiments, so please do not send me any mail about that.

If you have any volunteer work for me, please send me an e-mail! You always will get a respond and if I like the possible volunteer job, I will send you my contact information so that we could arrange a meeting.

I hope to hear from you!

With kind regards,
