Contract Opportunity: VACC Communications / Media Relations Coordinator
Part-time to Dec. 31/09

You are:
A dynamic, experienced communications professional who can generate media interest in events and create campaigns that get noticed. You write flawless press releases, have a solid network of Metro Vancouver media contacts, and aren’t afraid to pull off a creative stunt or two to attract the public’s interest. Ideally, you also love getting around by bike and/or have an interest in cycling and sustainable transportation.

We are:
The Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition (VACC), a not-for-profit that works improve conditions for cycling in Metro Vancouver. Through various programs and initiatives, we advocate for better cycling facilities, educate adults and children to ride safely, and encourage visibility and celebration of cycling as a legitimate and embraced mode of transportation. You will find the VACC out in your community on your commute to work during Bike to Work Week in spring and fall, at the new Great Rides events, in schools and community centres, at City Council meetings, at tables promoting the Burrard Bridge Protected Bikes Lanes trial, and at community events throughout the year.

What we need:
As cycling goes mainstream and front-page stories about bikes become commonplace, we’re looking for someone to generate excitement about the good work we’re doing.

What you’ll do:
• In consultation with VACC program staff, create media campaigns for print, web, TV and radio to publicize events such as school, community centre, and workplace workshops, and commuter stations around Metro Vancouver
• Promote events to the public to increase registration and participation
• Write promotional copy, press releases, and website content
• Monitor, evaluate and report on your initiatives

The terms:
Contract, 6-8 weeks, part-time (up to 20 hours per week)
Mid-November to late December, with possibility of extension
Remuneration to be discussed

To apply:
Send a one-page letter of interest, a CV, and three (3) writing samples to admin@vacc.bc.ca by 9am on Tuesday, Nov. 10/09. In your letter, tell us about the media campaign you’d plan to generate interest in cycling for transportation in Metro Vancouver.
