December 8 - December 17, 2012

The elephant conservation project started in 2011. The pilot project was successful and we got very positive feedback from both volunteers and the local government. The aim of the project is to assist the local governmental Elephant Conservation Centre in looking after elephants.
The Elephant Conservation Centre Seblat was established in October 1992, located in District Putri Hijau, North Bengkulu (also known as Southwest Sumatra). On the basis of Forestry Ministry Decree, this conservation centre lies on 6.865 hectare of land. In this area, there are various flora and fauna species which are protected, such as tapir, deer, various kinds of snakes, gibbon, hoop, monkey, monkey tail short, wild elephants, and various kinds of birds. Last year there were 11 tamed elephants, both male and female, which were being taken care of by the conservation centre. The area is located in the middle of the rural region Seblat, surrounded by rubber and oil palm forest. This place can be reached either by car or by bus for approximately 5 hours from the airport or Bengkulu City. There are 4 neighboring villages closeby: Suka Maju, Suka Merindu, Suka Baru and Suka Medan.
The volunteers will help local mahouts daily to take care of the elephants starting from bathing/showering, feeding, health checking and grassing the elephants. One local mahout will be accompanied by two volunteers in doing the daily job.

Teaching English and starting a recycling bank in China

International volunteers are invited in Gongcheng County to support the local population in different educational, renovation and environmental conservation projects.

The volunteers will work in village schools, organising educational and cultural exchange activities for the students to help them improve their English. Games will also be used as a tool for encouraging the kids to speak English. During school holidays (from mid January to the end of February and from mid July to the end of August), the volunteers will work with children in children centres.

Another task for the group will be the renovation and protection of some historic buildings in Gongcheng. This may involve repairing a stone road, clearing a yard or work on small gardens around the buildings, etc.

The volunteers will also help start a recycling bank in the area. First, they will help build and operate the recycling bank where the garbage can be separated or incinerated. Then the volunteers will run a campaign in the nearby villages about garbage separation and recycling, and the importance of keeping the environment clean. The volunteers can use their creativity and imagination to demonstrate that recycling can be fun, e.g making a fish from plastic bottle or paper, making a small flower from straw, making an apron from milk box. The group can also help to make recycle bins.

Location: Gongcheng Yao Autonomous County is located in north-east of Guangxi Province, bordering on Yangshuo town to the west, 108 km away from Guilin city.

Volunteers Needed for Women-Friendly Research on Smoking and Pregnancy (Downtown)

As part of ongoing work at the BC Centre of Excellence for Women's Health (located at BC Women's Hospital in Vancouver), we are looking for volunteers to help us with a digital storytelling project on smoking and pregnancy.

Digital storytelling is the practice of using computers (and other bits of technology like cameras and smartphones and scanners) to create and tell our own stories. We're holding a two day digital storytelling workshop on Feb 21 + Feb 22, 10-4. In this workshop, you'll have the chance to create your own story about pregnancy and smoking - to tell a story about your experiences of being a smoker and woman, experiences of pregnancy and being a new mom, experiences with friends and health care providers related to smoking, stories of trying to quit smoking, succeeding, failing, thinking about quitting...well, you get the idea.

You'll have the chance to
* Meet other women and hear about their experiences around smoking and pregnancy
* Share your story with a broader audience - other women, physicians, nurses, midwives and others who work with pregnant women and new moms
* Learn a new skill that you can take home and use in your own life (and maybe impress all your friends)

Lunch and an honorarium ($100/day) are provided.

If you're pregnant or have had a baby within the past 18 months and have tried to or quit smoking during this time and this sounds interesting to you, let us know. Contact Eliza at 604-875-2424 ext.

Solheimar is a sustainable community where about 100 people live and work together. Solheimar community emphasizes on the growth and development of man and nature. The social emphasis is that different individuals are offered variable opportunities to work, live and socialize.
The activity in Solheimar is versatile. In the village, there are organic greenhouses, both for vegetable cultivation and the only organic forestry in Iceland. There is also a shop/gallery in Solheimar, a cafι, a bakery, guesthouses and many art venues throughout the year. There are six workshops in the village: a candle workshop, ceramics, weaving, carpentry, fine art atelier and an herbal workshop that makes soaps, creams, paper, etc.
In Solheimar you will find a church, a sculpture garden, an arboretum, sports hall, gym and a swimming pool, a music garden, an art gallery and during the summer and for Advent a cultural festival with different venues; music, fine art, theater etc. The Eco-center Sesseljuhus was opened in 2002 where most conferences, meetings and other gatherings are held both for the village and visitors.
Today, Sσlheimar (the home of the sun) is a charming village renowned for its international, artistic and ecological atmosphere, which prides itself on its varied cultural, social and sporting activities. The village is only a one-hour drive from Reykjavik. The volunteers have free access to the swimming pool and the gym.
The volunteers will be working in the Φlur Forestry Centre (the only organic reforestation centre in Iceland). We will help the workers to take care and transplant trees and to do some actual reforestation work in the surroundings. Other tasks may arise depending on the needs of the community.

Available Volunteer for Museum/Heritage/Arts Opportunities (Vancouver/Lower Mainland)

I recently returned to Canada from living abroad for several years and I am now looking for volunteer (or employment) opportunities in a museum or other heritage/arts setting in the Vancouver/Lower Mainland region. I am trained in History (Bachelor of Arts - Canada) and Heritage Management/Museum Studies (Master's Degree - Australia). My education is supplemented with real-world employment experience as a historical researcher in both government and museum settings. These jobs required me to collect, analyse, and deliver information in a clear, professional manner. To do so, I often used primary source documents (correspondence, photographs, newsletters, government reports, etc. . .) collected through archives, online databases, and interviews.

I love history and my primary interests have generally been Canadian, Colonial, and Indigenous Studies. However, I am an eager learner and would welcome the opportunity to volunteer in other historical areas or even non-history based institutions. My specialist training includes knowledge of project planning, audience research, marketing, exhibition development, and collections management. . .all of which can be applied in a wide variety of heritage or arts settings. I also understand vitally important interpretation issues such cross-cultural engagement.

I speak English (native speaker) and French (ten years of immersion supplemented by five semesters in university). I have a valid driver's license and also possess clerical experience that includes answering phones, greeting people, data entry, and the use of standard office equipment. I am proficient with all versions of Windows and MS Office. I also have experience using proprietary software systems.

If I seem like a suitable fit for your organisation, please reply to this post and we can discuss my potential more thoroughly at your convenience.

The 2012 Daffodil Campaign (The Greater Vancouver Region)

Volunteer with the Canadian Cancer Society this April 2012!

To some the Daffodil is just a flower... But to us, it is a bright and hopeful symbol of support for people living with cancer. It tells them no one has to face cancer alone. It says we won't give up until cancer is defeated.

April is Daffodil Month and The Canadian Cancer Society is currently looking for individuals to help with their Daffodil Campaign in April.

There are two different ways to get involved: Street Teams or Pin Distribution

Street Team's are out on the streets and in malls in your community throughout April raising funds for The Society by distributing Daffodil pins and fresh flowers to the public for a donation. We ask that each volunteer commits to two-four hour shifts. Volunteer individually or with a group of friends.

Daffodil Pin boxes are located in businesses at various points of sale to raise funds and bring awareness to The Society and our mission. Pin Distribution Team's are responsible for servicing and maintaining the Daffodil Pin boxes by collecting donations from the boxes as well as ensuring there are enough pins throughout the month of April. This role usually takes approximately 2 hours per week during April.

If you are interested and you are looking for more information, please contact us by replying to this post!

In the meantime, please visit YouTube and type in "Daffodil Day 2011 Art Gallery Vancouver". It may just give you the inspiration you need to get involved!
"Ayur" in Sanskrit means "life" and "Veda" means "science". It is a perfect Science of health and longevity. This holistic science is the knowledge of complete balance of the body, mind and spirit, including the emotions and psychology, on all levels. It includes in its consideration, longevity, rejuvenation and self-realization therapies through herbs, diet, exercise, yoga, massage, aromas, tantras, mantras, and meditation. According to Ayurvedic tradition, health is the balance of elements air, earth, fire, and water, and illness is an excess or deficiency of any particular element. Ayurveda treats illness at its source, rather than at the level of symptoms, and helps an individual to take responsibility for their own health and well being. Ayurveda is also known as 'Ashtanga Veda' (the word literally means 'Eight branches of knowledge') as it is divided into eight specialized branches.
Yoga is a complete science of life that originated in India several thousands of years ago. It is the oldest system of personal development in the world, encompassing the entire body, mind and spirit. It is the union between a person's own consciousness and the universal consciousness. The classical techniques of Yoga date back more than 5,000 years. The word Yoga means "to join or yoke together," and it brings the body and mind together into one harmonious experience.
International volunteers will be learning the Basics of Yoga and Ayurveda in these three weeks of the project. Every day, there will be topics covered by a professional master (the person in charge of yoga and ayurveda classes), which will be practiced by the volunteers. Yoga will be practiced every day.
Apart from this, volunteers will also help in spreading awareness among the locals on issues like Health and Hygiene, environmental protection, solid waste management etc. Volunteers will need to be creative in their approach to give out the message through dramas and street plays. Volunteers who participate in this project need to bring materials and ideas for the program. The volunteer group will decide together on a plan of action.

For more details visit: www.cadip.org/volunteer-in-india.htm or give us a call: 604-628-7400

This project is part of CADIP's International Volunteer Program: www.cadip.org/workcamps.htm

Cadip volunteer project review: "I thoroughly enjoyed the 3 wk. project in South India. I didn't want it to end. As I am very passionate about children, yoga, and holistic modalities this was the perfect project for me. I also met new international friends and had many cultural exchanges with them and the children at St. Mary's school. This was a life changing experience for me and I plan to return to India in the future to study and live at a yoga ashram. I was fortunate enough to visit and stay at Amma's ashram near Allepey for a couple of days after the project finished. I personally think Kerala, South India is pure love! The head sister at the school was so warm and welcoming as were the people in Kannur. We learned about some of the Indian traditions and celebrations from our coordinator and team leader as well. I highly recommend this project if you are passionate about children, holistic practices and have an open mind. Thank you." Lisa Z.

The Akha tribe is the fourth largest hill-tribe group in Thailand. Originally from the highlands of the Yunan Province in China, there are now Akha in Thailand, Laos, China and Burma. The population of the Akha in these five countries may range as high as 400,000 or higher. Genealogical charts show 70 generations of Akha, putting the start of their civilization at least 1500 years ago. There are about 63,000 Akha in Northern Thailand scattered over some 278 villages, over 80% of whom live in the Chiang Rai Province. Most Akha are farmers, cultivating dry rice and vegetables, breeding pigs, gathering food from the jungle and occasionally hunting or fishing. The villages are located in remote areas at high elevations. Over the centuries, the Akha have developed unique ceremonies, culture and religion. Up until the last 30 years, there was little contact with outsiders. Due to rapid social and economic changes in this region, most dramatically brought about by western style capitalism, the lifestyle and very lives of these people are being destroyed. They now are having great difficulty holding onto the land on which they live, they are increasingly being pushed into deeper poverty for the majority and they are facing increased problems of drug use, prostitution and imprisonment. Although modernization and missionaries have caused change in some Akha villages, many Akha still maintain much of their culture and traditions.
The main aims of the project are to promote the distinct Akha culture between international volunteers and to establish a real intercultural encounter between the volunteers and the local people. Through common activities and free time, the volunteers will have the possibility to learn more about the situation of the hill tribes and the Akha in particular.
The main objective of the project is cultural exchange between the volunteers and the local villagers but the participants of the project will also practically work in the communities doing several kinds of support and development works, like renovation of some community spaces or field work and farming with the villagers. The exact nature of the work will depend of the needs of the village at the moment of the project.
Participating in the Hill tribe volunteer project in Northern Thailand gives you the opportunity to meet local rural communities while also giving you the chance to really understand the culture and traditions of this fascinating part of Thailand. The work is very diverse, from construction to teaching and working with the villagers. Volunteers are expected to be flexible about the nature of the work as it can vary according to the need of the community. The essence of this project is to spend time with the Hill tribes and learn about their culture.
The volunteers will learn about Akha culture, lifestyle, particularities and problematic situation in Thailand from the inside and from Akha people themselves. An introduction to Akha and Thai language is foreseen.

We are First United, a refuge for 200+ homeless and marginalised folks in Vancouver's DTES.

Every day we serve up to 1000 meals to folks in our community.

We currently have an urgent need for folks to help us out with our food service. We need up to 5 volunteers for each of three meals, particularly breakfast (7:45-9:30am) and lunch (11:30am-1:30pm).

The ideal person is fairly mobile and can interact comfortably with people from all walks of life with respect and kindness.

You would be working with staff & other volunteers to set up communal dining tables, hand out plates, collect dishes and clean up after meals. Most folks who dine with us clean up after themselves.

If you wanted longer shifts we can keep you busy before or after your kitchen shift, as well!

If you can picture yourself making a contribution to a marginalised community through the serving and sharing of delicious, wholesome food, we'd love to hear from you!

Drop us an email, and please make it easy for us to contact you by including a phone number. Sometimes our reply emails go into people's junk mail folders.
Thanks!

Hello, I am a Doctoral Candidate in the Applied Psychology program at the University of Calgary. I am from the Victoria BC area, and am looking to recruit research participants on the west-coast. I am looking for individuals who are either in therapy (or have been in therapy) in an effort to deal with problems related to all types of gambling. I am curious about your experience, and in particular what you found helpful, and also problematic about the therapeutic experience. I have already conducted two focus-group interviews with clinicians who provide counselling to people dealing with addictions, and they are also invested in this research initiative. I believe the field of problem gambling needs to hear from those in need in an effort to better provide services in the future.

Participation involves either two-60 minute phone or in-person interviews. The interview will be taped, transcribed, and then tapes will be deleted according to ethical policy guidelines. All linking information will be excluded. All participants will be given a final copy of the findings, and a follow-up online discussion forum open to all participants is optional.

If you would like more information about the study or are interested in participating, or if you know of someone who might be interested, please e-mail me (Murray) at murray.anderson@gmail.com.

The city has recorded history dating back a thousand years and a mythical history which explains the origin of the name - apparently, this was the place where the demon Mahishasura was slain by the Goddess Chamundi. You will find a statue of the demon on Chamundi hill which commemorates this event.
In the frame of the project, the volunteers will be working with the tribal community in the field of education, renovation, environmental protection, reforestation, tree planting, spreading health and hygiene awareness among the tribal villages. We will be working together in building a more peaceful and working environment with the help of a local organization. Volunteers will need to be creative in their approach to give out the message through drama and street plays. Volunteers who participate in this project need to bring materials and ideas for the program on their arrival, after which the whole group will settle on a common plan of action.

The home currently houses girls only but also helps boys in terms of providing education. We would like to show these children that people do care for them and give them hope through education and Christian upbringing.
During the initial orientation, the objectives and expectations of the program will be presented to the volunteers. The volunteers will be involved in taking care of the kids, including activities such as teaching them the alphabet and numbers, singing, drawing and making craft, assisting in daily work. Participants should have a positive attitude, be ready to adopt and enjoy simple living conditions, be flexible and patient.
WE SUPPLY FOOD, VET CARE AND TRAINING SUPPORT.

We are a dog rescue group and have been operating for nearly 40 years,

We urgently seek foster homes for dogs known as Sporting or Gun Dogs, such as:

Labs, Pointers, Weimaraners,Vizslas, Setters, etc.

These are high energy dogs, excellent for hiking, running, daily jogging, retrieving. We also help out with Hound rescue
and rescue senior dogs. This is the time of year that people start dumping their old dogs because they promised their kids a puppy
for Christmas. There is nothing more rewarding than providing a loving home for an abandoned older dog! They are so
appreciative!

If you have the time, energy, commitment and a love of dogs - plus an appropriate, safe home, you can help save the life
of one of the 50,000 dogs killed in North America every day.

Please consider volunteering with the rescue and rehoming of these lovely breeds of dogs.

Home and reference checks are necessary for all adoptive and foster parents.
With about 1000 disabled and disadvantaged children coming from many parts of Hai Duong province, it's the biggest center of this type in the north of Vietnam. In the welfare center, the children are handicapped in many different ways. Some are deaf mute, some are mentally disabled, physically disabled, or both. The center aims to provide compulsory education and vocational training, to create employment opportunities for the children. The center has a wide variety of courses for children of different age groups, ranging from infants to 18 years old. For example, children between the ages of 6 to 12 are provided with educational courses, and the older children are able to attend vocational training courses at the center. Furthermore, the center is helping to look for job opportunities for the children when they finish their courses.
Volunteer help is needed in different areas. One of the main tasks is improving the quality of the center in order to make it a better living place for the children. The project activities include renovating the building by painting the walls and cleaning up the dormitories for the children.
The volunteers will also organize interesting and meaningful leisure activities for the orphaned and disabled children, with the aim to enrich their daily life in the center and to give them a chance to open their minds to the outside world. The children have different skills and difficulties, so the activities must be adapted to them. You are expected to be imaginative and flexible. With one more or one less rule in a game, you can make it more accessible to all of them.
Project language: English
Age range: 18 and over
Location: Hai Duong city is about 60 km away from Ha Noi, the capital of Vietnam.

Hi
If your reading this, it means that you are curious and the type of person who believes in family
My husband and I have been trying to get pregnant. Our doctors tell us it is time to consider egg donation
We are seeking someone who at least carriers a few of my genetic characteristics. I am tall, athletically built, celtic background.
We are looking for a person with a healthy family history
While these things pale in comparison to baring a child it may be helpful if they look a little like me.

If this is something you would consider, we thank you with all our hearts
We can discuss the details, compensation, etc... in person
Please email us and help us to begin our family
Bless you in your decision

I have had the crazy idea to introduce a Vegetarian Day to Vancouver :-)

I am vegetarian, mostly vegan, myself and I would love to see this city going vegetarian once a week. The reasons are obvious: everyone's health, protecting the environment and saving animals.
I am working on a strategy at the moment and I would love to enrol some people in this project. More thinking heads, more creative ideas, better results :-)

I do not have a fixed plan yet and I am curious about what YOU think. Please email me if you would like to to be part of this project or if you would just like to comment on the idea. I am looking forward to hearing from you!
Cheers,
