Professor Jerry Wasserman speaks to the themes of self-deception and disappointment with life prevalent in mid-to-late century American theatre, such as "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" The lecture looks at instances where individuals and families find themselves let down, disillusioned or betrayed by The American Dream, in works by playwrights such as Albee, Williams, O'Neil, Miller, Shepard and Mamet.
