You describe your job as a professional teacher, earning $80,000.00, ($6,666.66 per month x 12 months), annually. I can't help but wonder if you have ever had any other kind of job. If you were to take actual hours worked I think you would be surprised at your hourly rate. Please take into consideration that, not only do you get the summer off, pus your 5 professional days, plus every stat holiday, and spring break, as well as Christmas holidays. On top of that you never work weekends and rarely have 'meet the parents' night, or extra time mandated, participation. I know of no other profession that gets that kind of time to pursue what ever they like, including the furthering of education, which is rewarded with higher pay rates.
As the son of two teachers I saw first hand, both my parents schedules. (My father was an elementary school principal.) When I was old enough to drive I chauffeured my mother to school and back each day. She started at 9:00 AM and was done at 3:00 PM. That totaled a five hour day, as opposed to most jobs that require at least a 7.5 hour day. My mother said that the requirements of the curriculum taught did not vary from one year to the next, so all she had to do was repeat the previous years lessons.
Had I known at the time, the difference between teaching and what I came to know as the, 'real world' workplace, I would have opted for teaching in a split second. After all, a respected position in society and time to do what we want to do, is the greatest gift of life, as I see it.
Yes, there are teachers who are dedicated to educating our young people and preparing them with the skills needed to survive. Many do go above and beyond the minimum requirements of their positions and kudos to them.
I happen to live in a high rise across the street from an elementary school and I notice how the 'teacher's' parking is nearly empty by 3:30 PM each day. (I work from my home and never work less that 50-60 hour weeks.)
The points that you made about ESL and special needs are good ones. Perhaps you should write your MP about the levels of immigration; but Oh!, isn't it your job to teach? As for the 'special needs' children, what would you have the system do? Segregate them away from the 'narrow parameter', normal ones?

Italian police recently set up road blocks in and around fairly affluent neighbourhood to check up on whatever. One fellow they stopped was driving a brand new $100,000 Mecedes. His wife in the passenger seat was collecting Social Welfare and the driver himself claimed Zero income for last year on his Tax report. Apparently there were others with similar stories.

1) Teachers don't really receive that high an income. After teaching for 10 years, with a Master's degree (earned by taking courses at night while still continuing to work full time) a teacher in BC earns around $80,000 a year. In other words, after a cumulative total of 6 years post-secondary education and 10 years work experience, teachers earn $80k a year. A beginning teacher, after 5 years post secondary education, makes half that. What do you suppose beginning lawyers, accountants and other professionals make?
2) What makes teaching stressful is that there increasing demand on teachers to do more with less. Integrate technology into each classroom? Absolutely! Tell the government that each teacher and each classroom needs an Internet connection, an LED projector, and a white board, AS DOES EVERY CLASSROOM IN THE UK AND IN MOST OF THE EU COUNTRIES. Eliminate restrictions about how many special needs children can be placed in any one classroom? Certainly! Just make sure the government to fund more Special Education Assistants so that those kids can be adequately aided to meet their Individualised Education Plan goals, and the classroom teacher is not responsible for modifying EVERY piece of material to meet the needs of EVERY student.
3) Professional Days are NOT days off!
EVERY teacher in the province gets exactly FIVE paid training days per year to ensure that their professional learning needs get met so that they can stay up to date with the latest educational research (which often translates into "We are completely changing the focus of the way you teach Math (or Language Arts, or Science) so we're changing the textbook again! You'll get to spend the morning reading through it with your grade group colleagues (ie the other teachers) and you'll be expected to master the material over your (UNPAID!!!) summer vacation so that you can teach it in the next semester".
4) Ah...my favourite myth! The extended summer vacation that teachers enjoy. I remember how much fun it was, growing up, while my father went to summer school so that he could improve his teaching credentials (and thus his take home pay). The single salary my mom made as a nurse kept our family of four going, thanks to lots of scrimping. Until a few years ago, the only way to be paid year 'round for a teacher was to request that your district clawed back 17% of your salary from every check during the school year. Your district then pays you two lump sums in the middle of the summer. (They keep all the interest they earn on your money, though, because they're doing you such a great favour and it costs so much to administer this program.

I say, pay them an hourly rate similar to other good trades people and have them work a 40 hour week and shift work as others do. There are so many new teachers graduating from University there should be no need for overtime. As well, I suggest all schools be operated on a 3-shift 24hr day, 7 days a week basis, in order to allow those who wish to spend less time in the education system to get on with their life much sooner.

I myself left school at 14 years of age. I spent 52 years in the work force, and have been retired this past 15 years. Educated in UK during the war, I believe I received a good basic education that, over the years, I have supplemented with various college courses however, I never attended University other than to take in seminars - of which there were a great many. This education allowed me to work in mechanical engineering jobs in which I did earn an excellent salary.
7) So....14 + 52 +15 = 77 by my calculations. You're 77 years old then? WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU SPENT ANY PERIOD OF TIME IN AN ELEMENTARY OR SECONDARY SCHOOL IN THIS PROVINCE?? You've not seen a classroom made up of more than 90% ESL learners who NEVER speak English outside the classroom environment, plus a few who live in such abject poverty that their parents are unable to afford their school supplies. You've never seen a child who had to whisper in a teacher's ear "My parents can't afford for me to go on that field trip". You've probably also never seen an autistic student in a regular classroom who attends school for the full day but only gets funded for 2.5 hours of SEA time a day, leaving the classroom teacher responsible for making sure that student doesn't injure themselves or another student (while still having to teach a Language Arts lesson that has 6 different modified assignments to ensure that each learners' chances of meeting the Prescribed Learning Outcome of the day. THAT is the reality in many BC classrooms.

You also failed to do any research at all about your topic, which enables me to pick your arguments apart like they were made using toothpicks and white glue.
Like my computer skills, I am self taught. I use the good old two finger S&P metheod but find I can type almost as fast as my grand-daughter who has received training.
10) Who taught your computer skills? The correct syntax for that sentence would be "Like my computer skills, my typing skills were learned on my own."; you could also say "As with my computer skills, my computer skills were self-taught." The sentence as written makes little sense, though one can derive the intended meaning by reading carefully. Therefore, I'd have to rate your command of grammar at "Approaching Expectations".
10 a) Where did your granddaughter receive said training? In a public elementary school? Why don't you ask her about the realities of her classroom? Better still...why don't you ask her teacher??
You've undoubtedly surmised by now that I am a teacher by training. What prepared me to critique your letter was the 22 years I spent in a 5th grade classroom. That's about where I'd place your ability to support a well-reasoned argument and write a personal opinion essay. I'd score it at 2.5 out of 4; that's what translates roughly to a C+. I have no problem with work/living conditions being enforced but why have a minimum wage? The worker would work for less at home in the Philippines or UAE but the Canadian Government will not let us benefit from the lower wage scale.
