Position Overview

The Corporate Services Department requires a regular full-time Animal Control Officer.
Responsibilities You will be involved in inspectional, regulatory and investigational work. Responsibilities will include investigating and enforcing the Dog Tax and Regulation Bylaw, investigating complaints or infractions, issuing written notices/tickets for violation, performing follow-up inspections and catching and transporting stray or dangerous animals to the animal shelter. You will also investigate complaints of a varied nature such as in public parks, streets and parking, graffiti, public smoking, noise, untidiness, election signs and lawn watering. In addition, you will prepare a variety of reports, gather evidence and appear in court as a witness. This position requires a high level of interaction with the public, kennel and/or shelter staff and veterinarian staff.
Requirements You will possess sound animal control regulatory experience with a minimum of five years experience as an Animal Control Officer, or a combination of training and experience, which should include knowledge of dog tax and regulation bylaw and methods, procedures and equipment used in catching, handling and safe transportation of animals, including dangerous, stray and sick animals. A valid B.C. Class 5 Drivers’ License is required. Computer literacy in Microsoft Office would be a definite asset. The ability to work with minimal direction, proven interpersonal skills to deal tactfully and firmly with the public, and report writing skills are required.

A condition of employment is obtaining and maintaining an enhanced RCMP security clearance.


Compensation & Benefits Salary:
$23.03 to $27.10 per hour
$1,842.40 to $2,168.00 bi-weekly
(Pay Grade 18, January 2009 rates)

Hours of Work:
8 1/2 consecutive hours, inclusive of an unpaid one-half hour meal break, between the hours of 8.00 am and 9.00 pm, any five consecutive days with two consecutive days off. (Currently under review).
