Here is a 36 foot, with 11' beam, all steel construction ex-Marine Vietnam MK IV Gunboat that is extremely solid with military armament and water tight bulkheads.
The Gunboat is currently on the hard in Seattle and being readied for the installation of the rebuilt Detroit 6-71 Diesel that is included with the sale.
Being on the hard the boat hides absolutely nothing and shows the extremely solid condition that it is in.
I was planning on converting the Gunboat into a liveaboard as the boat is extremely safe, ruggedly durable and spacious, plus there is no more reliable engine than the straight 6-71 Detroit diesel.
Note: The boat did see service in Vietnam and was apparently used by the C.I.A. to ferry special ops teams into enemy territory. I did find a canister on the boat which held an extremely detailed set of C.I.A. Maps of Vietnam which were undoubtedly used on at least one mission. I also have some paperwork on the boat that has be "declassified" by the U.S. military, all of which are included with the sale of the boat.
This boat will take any seas you throw at it, as it's steel construction makes it far more rigid than any wood or fiberglass vessel, in fact, this Gunboat was extremely over-engineered by the U.S. government and is designed to be carried and air dropped by two chinook helicopters via cable mounting eyes at either end of the vessel, (there are not too many boats that can be picked up by their deck).
Knowing that over 10,000 shipping containers are lost at sea every year I would not consider cruising in anything but a steel hull. A log or shipping container strike on this boat will likely just scratch the paint or maybe even dent it a bit where as the same strike would likely sink a wood or fiberglass hulled vessel.
This boat will need a lot of work as the pictures show, but she's extremely solid and because she’s made of steel, she is much easier to work on than wood or fiberglass boats so it will go quickly. She could be lived aboard where she is while you finish her as the marina has shower and laundry facilities and the cost of moorage/storage is $270 a month.
NOTE: THIS BOAT HAS NOT BEEN ALTERED STRUCTURALLY IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM, KEEPING HER MILITARY STRENGTH AND RUGGEDNESS INTACT.
Included in the sale if desired is another 36ft ex Navy gunboat, also on the hard in the same boatyard in Seattle. This second gunboat is constructed of wood instead of steel, I purchased it with the intention of swapping all of the good stuff, including the fresh engine, into the steel gunboat. This second gunboat has nearly everything on it to finish the steel gunboat with very little extra expense, including the fresh 6-71 engine.
The wood gunboat has has a completely rebuilt 6-71 detroit diesel with 40hrs of use on the clock, stainless steel prop shaft, it uses the same prop as the steel gunboat, (so you’d have a spare), it has a new incinerating toilet, it has a crap pot puller, and many other extras.
This boat would make a great dive boat, kyak mothership, work boat, live aboard, adventure tour boat, or....
I’m asking $11,500 for both Gunboats with the transferable moorage at Mosquito Creek Marina (where there is currently a six year waiting list for a 36 ft long slip) located one block from the Key and the Sea Bus on the North Shore of Vancouver B.C.
I may be interested in a part trade and I may be interested in breaking up the set.
