We are currently conducting a study about child language, with children ages 3 to 5 years. This is not an evaluation of language ability. Rather, we're interested in learning about how children grow to be speakers of their native language as a natural process, and in understanding some of the stages children go through in this process.
Participation in the study involves your child playing a game with two researchers and a puppet in our lab on SFU campus. The researcher tells a series of short stories about animals. After each story, the puppet says a sentence about what happened in the story, and your child's task is to say whether the puppet was right or wrong. Children often find participation in these studies great fun, and they see it as a game.
There is one session of about 20-30 minutes involved in the study. You can remain with your child for the entirety of the session. We record the session on videotape for analysis at a later time, but your child's image and name will not be shared with anyone outside of the lab. If at any time your child wishes to stop the game, the session will end immediately.
