 In British Columbia, on Canadas Northwest Coast, we have a native culture with a history comparable to the Great Pyramids of Egypt, the pillars of Rome and temples of the Far East, with artists of equal talent. The voices of the culture still remain today in the art. Art is its survival.
The powerful silence of the native art speaks a worthy breath, sparked with the right energy to carry it around the world, it will bring a much larger awareness of its people and culture.
One such artist, Clarence Mills, has over the past 20 years established markets in Canada, The United States, Asia and Europe. The artwork created in the tradition of his people. The Haida family crests being the ideas incorporated into the carvings in argillite, ivory, red and yellow cedar boxes, bowls, doors, plaques, limited edition silkscreen prints, engraved silver and gold jewelry and monumental size totem poles for international events.
Today Clarence does everything from jewelry for stars such as Burt Reynolds to totem poles for the Louvre Museum.

Haida Name: Gahghin-skuss (Out of your own land)
Member of the Eagle Clan, Skidegate, Crest: Split Raven, Grizzly Bear, Clarence Mills, Heritage â€" Haida
Haida artist Clarence Mills was born at Skidegate, Queen Charlotte Islands, British Columbia in 1958. He is a member of the Eagle Clan and takes the Spirit Raven and Grizzly Bear as his crests.
His grandfather Jimmy Wilson was hereditary Chief Skedans. His great-grandfather, carver Henry Young, gave him his Haida name - Gahghinskuss, meaning 'out of your own land'.
With guidance from his uncle, Doug Wilson, Clarence began studying traditional Haida art at the age of eighteen. He carves argillite, ivory, gold and silver jewellery, cedar boxes, bowls, doors, plaques, limited edition prints, and recently, monumental size totem poles for international events.
Clarence has established markets for his artwork in Canada, the United States and Europe.
